Preventing damage to drainage facilities in HCMUD 278
Within Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 278, there are several detention ponds that the District is responsible for maintaining that help mitigate the chances of flooding during heavy rain events such as Hurricane Harvey. The District Board of Directors requests residents in the District assist with ensuring the detention ponds are well-maintained and ready for heavy rains.
Recently, residents have reported to the Board of Directors seeing people riding recreational vehicles in our detention ponds. The resulting damage to the ponds includes tire ruts and dead grass that must be repaired to prevent erosion of the side slopes of the ponds. Erosion may cause the detention ponds to function less efficiently during heavy rains.
Additionally, any damage to the detention ponds, curbs, inlets, and outlets must be repaired, and repairs can be costly to the District and its residents.
If you are aware of someone riding recreational vehicles in the detention ponds, please report it to the Harris County Sherriff’s Office at 713-221-6000. Please do not confront the individual, but please do report it to the Sherriff’s office. Please note that any emergencies and urgent issues should still be reported by calling 911.
By working together, the Board of Directors and District residents can help ensure the District is ready for any heavy rains this hurricane season.
